The Teton Residence on stone walls by Ro Rockett Design

Ro Rockett Design has created this impressive country retreat in the wetlands of Teton County, Idaho. The house is elevated on stone walls to overcome the seasonal fluctuation of the surrounding ecosystem. As an added benefit, the views from the house are breathtaking!

Sustainable design in the wetlands

A young family with a large lot in Teton County, Idaho turned to Ro Rockett Design with a dream of building a retreat. The architects wished to preserve and restore the site’s diverse landscape, which consists of wetland and upland regions where vegetative areas have been historically overgrazed, and a small spring creek, which once supported a healthy cutthroat trout fishery.

The house is located on a large lot amidst the expansive wetland. To address the risk of flooding, and minimize the building footprint, the architecture is elevated. The layout is compact and efficient with a focus on building “up” instead of “out” – a strategy that allows light into the house and creates amazing views of the Grand Tetons.

Maximizing the surrounding environment

The deep roof overhangs provide shading and coverage from the region’s ever-changing weather while monumental glazed openings with direct access to covered porches lets you take in the landscape and wildlife. The design team has worked with a material palette of earthen rock and stained wood works to tie the architecture to the tones, materials and textures of Teton County. The house, floating above the landscape, becomes a wonderful retreat in a truly unique environment.
