The Baleine diver from Nezumi Studios is a classic 40mm dive watch with vintage looks and inspiration from the rare 1950s Submariners. With an automatic movement and water resistance to 200 meters (660 ft.), it’s the perfect choice for an active lifestyle – in style. Meet the entire Baleine family below and pick your favorite.
A Vintage-inspired Diver
Designer and Founder of Nezumi Studios, David Campo, has taken inspiration from the ’60s and ’70s and created a classic diver with a gorgeous retro color scheme and cool details. The atypical large numerals are inspired by the extremely rare “Explorer Dial” Submariners of the late 1950s. The Baleine (French for whale) is the first diver in the Nezumi Watch Collection and now available in version 2 (the first version had an offset date window).
Among the features are a 120 click unidirectional turning bezel, sapphire glass and water resistance to 200 meters (600 ft). The watch is sold with a hand-stitched Italian vegetable tanned leather strap which is great for everyday wear and really compliments the retro look.
If you plan to use your watch for swimming or diving, go for one of Nezumi’s Terrain NATO straps: all three colors look great with any of the Baleine models. If you prefer a bracelet, the Stewart Jubilee is a fantastic choice: we especially love it with the brushed steel Baleine Ref. BA2.202.
For the Baleine diver, Nezumi Studios uses the Japanese automatic movement “NH35” by Seiko. This movement has stop seconds (hacking movement), 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz) and 24 jewels. The power reserve is estimated at 41 hours and the accuracy 20 – + 40 seconds per day (23º ± º2C*). Seiko’s movement is the counterpart for a Swiss movement and thanks to this, you get both good quality and reliability…and Nezumi Studios can keep their prices very fair!
Meet the Baleine family
Nezumi Studios currently has three models in the Baleine diver family. All of them have granite black dials, but they have different casings in polished or brushed stainless steel or in a special brushed DLC Gold Coated stainless steel as well as other subtle differences.
If you’re looking for something truly unique, you should look out for the occasionally ‘Nezumi Specials’ which are ultra-rare limited editions. The gold edition (Ref. BA2S.122) is part of the Nezumi Specials line which means that it’s limited and individually numbered to just 50 watches! From time to time, Nezumi Studios even has unique collaborations for their Specials.
In A Collaboration With Metal Band Anthrax
The last one (from December 2020) was a blacked-out Baleine edition made in collaboration with the American metal band Anthrax in celebration of the 30-year anniversary of their album “Persistence of Time”.
Conclusion: A Genuine Diver with Vintage Looks and Automatic Movement
The Baleine diver is an honest timepiece with clear references and subtle retro vibes. The granite black dial is a fantastic base for the large numerals and David Campo just always gets the colors right with his signature twist and eye for detail.
It might be something that you don’t recognize right away, but we guarantee that it’s something that you’ll notice after months of wearing…and when other people compliment your watch.
Like many other Nezumi Studios fans, we are thrilled to see a timepiece with automatic movement from the Swedish brand! Our Baleine favorites are the BA2.202 with the Stewart Jubilee bracelet and the limited-edition in gold BA2S.122 with the black leather strap.
